The cathedral was commissioned in 1868 by Henry Fitzalan-Howard, 15th Duke of Norfolk. Joseph Hansom designed the building in the French Gothic style popular in the 13th and 14th centuries. It was dedicated in 1873 as the catholic parish church of Arundel, only to become a cathedral of the diocese of Arundel and Brighton in 1965.
