Hersonissos, Χερσόνησος, is a town and municipality located in the north of Crete.
Hersonissos is built on the ancient town of Chersonesos. Some of the ruins of the old Roman seaport can still be seen, although most are submerged.
Many prehistoric finds have been found in the local area around Hersonissos, including a temple dedicated to the goddess Britomartis.
The modern town is now dependent on the tourism industry, there are many souvenir shops and restaurants along the high street.
